the chipettes~!

the chipettes were created in 1983 by Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his wife, Janice Karman. the creation of these characters began after Ross and Janice's very first date, when Ross asked Janice to help him revive his father's legacy - Alvin and the Chipmunks. she agreed, and a beautiful relationship was born!

they began the difficult work of revamping the concept of the singing chipmunk trio and making it marketable for the children of the 80s. the TV series Alvin and the Chipmunks (later just The Chipmunks) aired from 1983-1990 under various animation studios (poor Janice appears to have been constantly tasked with getting these projects animated by anyone who would do the job).

Ross sang the songs for Alvin and Simon, and, in order to lend her vocal talents to the project, the chipettes were designed so that songs sung by female vocalists could be covered by Janice. the chipettes are more than just counterparts to the boys of Alvin and the Chipmunks, though- they are great characters in their own right! (tbh the original character designs for them outshine those for Alvin and his brothers without a doubt)
